Today I wanted to talk about the products we use every day and their toxicity to our bodies.
I recently downloaded an app called Think Dirty. With this app you can scan or search for any product and it will tell you if that product is toxic. If it is, the app will explain, in easy-to-understand terms, which ingredients are toxic and what effect those toxins have on the human body. From there, you can decide whether or not you feel safe with that product in your home.
One day, using the Think Dirty app, I decided to do some inventory of our bathroom. Let me just say that it was a little bit alarming. I have things in the bathroom that I know are toxic, of course, such as Clorox for cleaning. But I didn't expect such toxicity from the products that I put directly onto my body. Turns out, my face wash is one of the most toxic products in our bathroom. I am rubbing harsh, damaging chemicals into my face every morning and night. And, sure, I've always known that many of my products had chemical ingredients; but I was not aware of how dangerous they really are. My biggest concerns right now are the carcinogens (substances capable of causing cancer in living tissue) and the hormone disruptors. Most hormone disruptors are found in the "fragrance" of our products. Many manufacturers label "fragrance" with no clear company policy or whether they use synthetic or all-natural fragrances. Often, a combination of nearly 3,000 fragrant ingredients are added to personal care items. Most of these ingredients are hormone disruptors and/or allergens.
So, in an effort to clean up our bathroom over time, I picked up clean versions of the products we needed.
I started with shampoo. This is the hydrating shampoo from Acure. According to the Think Dirty app, there are no ingredients in this shampoo that are known toxins to the human body. Actually, I've used this shampoo before. Unfortunately, I didn't like it because it didn't lather as much as other shampoos I had used. However, I now understand that an excessive lather is more dirty than clean. That lather is created using even more chemicals. It's artificial. And with that new knowledge in mind, I am giving this shampoo another try.
The next thing we needed was some more toothpaste. This is Earth Paste toothpaste in wintergreen. Now, this product did not show up on Think Dirty. The app is still new and less popular products may not be in the system yet. So, I chose this paste because it had the fewest ingredients and zero ingredients that I did't understand. It's basically just clay and essential oils. I've also used charcoal powder to whiten my teeth, because other whitening products tend to burn my gums, and it works really well.
The last thing we currently needed was some hand soap. One of the things I was looking for, in addition to the simplicity of a product, was locality. I want to support local business as much as possible. So I was excited to come across Austin Natural Soap in lemongrass. This is another product with very few ingredients. All it has is water, olive oil, coconut oil, lemongrass essential oil for the scent, and citric acid to create the foam. They have a few different scents available in this edition of their soap, and if you prefer a bar to a foam, they have a plethora of scents available for their soap bars.
I was glad to be able to find such clean products fairly easily. And if you don't see simple products in your locals stores, don't be afraid to order online (Think Dirty will provide clean alternatives to your products along with a link to order them), and encourage your local stores to carry the products you would rather buy.
